The 27-year-old has struggled to make an impact since arriving in 2009 and with the arrival of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson the Italian will find himself even further down the pecking order.
The main stumbling block is his £70,000 wages. The Italian Club cannot afford that to pay what Liverpool are paying, so it's up to the player to take a pay-cut and move on to further his career.
He had a successful spell with Juventus last season and forced himself back into international reckoning and would only see his progress halted by staying at Anfield.
In other news goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has moved to Hull City on a season-long loan and Chris Mavinga has completed his £1million transfer to French club Rennes.
