So Arsenal have apparently bid £18m for reported LFC target Juan Mata. Manchester City are also interested in Mata as a cheaper alternative to Alexis Sanchez. My concern here is our lack of real intent to get this player. Why are we looking at Stewart Downing when we could pick up Mata for around the same fee? He's younger and in my opinion better than Downing.
Reports also suggest we are in for Aaron Lennon again at around £20m. Surely we are not going to be able to afford Downing & Lennon. Who would suit us best?
We need a left winger more than a right winger, so that's maybe why Kenny is looking at Downing. He's a good player, who has improved a lot, but is he LFC quality? Is he the 2nd choice behind Young? I feel we should go all out for Mata then look at Downing if we fail.

Not to mention Raheem Sterling, who plays from the left and should hopefully be knocking on the 1st team's door soon.
Downing would be an improvement to the team and would supply Carroll with some decent service but he's not of the quality we should be aiming for.
I agree 100%. Sterling should be given a chance next season. He's scoring for England and has shown flashes of real quality last season.
I'm not sure about Downing. Like you said, an improvement but not the quality we should be going for. Mata all the way for me.
Saying that the way we are going lately we'll miss out on all our targets.
