Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux, a long term Liverpool target, has surprisingly signed for Newcastle on a five-year deal. Rumours suggested that the player, who has had a number of previous injury problems including a groin injury which restricted him to just 10 apearances last season, failed an Anfield medical.
Marveaux however stated that the reason for the last minute change of heart was due to a failure to agree personal terms with Liverpool and not a falied medical. The midefielder will now join the Magpies on 1sy July 1st told L’Equipe, “I do not want to go into details, but if I did not sign in Liverpool, it was because there was a contractual disagreement between the parties Thursday night,”.
Whatever the reason, this is another blow to the Reds following the failure to sign Phil Jones and Ashley Young. How big a blow remains to be seen. If the player is still suffering with injuries next season, it may work out to be a blessing in disguise. We are still in the market for wingers with the likes of Stuart Downing and Juan Mata being constantly linked and Kenny Dalglish must now move on to other targets if he is to strengthen the squad.
